The artist has given the full amount of his £25k Mercury Prize winnings to the trust for venues, which operates to protect the UK's small live music spots.

The star was given the prize on October 16 as his latest record his work was declared the outstanding release of the past year.

The musician has decided to hand the money over to the MVT, in recognition of the crucial part grassroots venues had in his beginning days.

"I personally would not have achieved this success if it weren't for all the gigs I did around the region, and elsewhere, when I was beginning," remarked Sam Fender. "These spaces are iconic, but they are in difficulty."

Since the start of 2023, over 150 of these locations have permanently closed – roughly 16 percent of the total UK scene.

Over the past year, major artists such as Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the Music Venues Trust in its attempts to help venues survive, by applying a small levy to their ticket prices, which benefits local stages.

Fender also joined in, collecting over £100k on his live tour to support numerous local spots across the UK.

These funds supported venues that were dealing with possible closure due to issues caused by floods, fires and bereavements, as well as permit problems, conflicts and neighbor objections.

Other venues were granted funding support in modernizing infrastructure and gear that positively impacted performers and fans.

"The notion that money from shows in large arenas supports the smaller venues, where it begins for musicians like me, is just logical," the star has commented.

Fender is far from the only musician to give his honor winnings to good deeds.

When they earned the award in the year 1996 for their record the album, vocalist Jarvis Cocker stated that the group would give their winnings to the non-profit War Child.

During 2002, rapper and singer she split her prize across multiple charities, including the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell organization.

"Additionally, I contributed a grand to the center, to their gymnastics program, because I practiced gymnastics when I was growing up and they needed better apparatus," the artist explained to a publication.

Previously, Ezra Collective gave their prize money to the community center that developed their act, as well as other independent music bodies.

And 1994 winners they contributed their award to a multiple sclerosis charity after a friend was identified with the condition.

"Receiving the award was ample," said vocalist Small. "The cash was the cherry on top but we didn't require the bonus, because we had the cake. So our winning impacted another person's life."

Last week, the MVT announced it had protected a couple of grassroots venues in that region, by placing them under public stewardship.

The Joiners in Southampton and the other in that location were bought under the public acquisition program, which is funded by a national body and enthusiasts who acquire "ownership units" in the buildings.
